What is an apicoectomy?

An apicoectomy is a microsurgical procedure performed on teeth that continue to have symptoms after root canal treatment. This procedure requires an endodontist to examine the tooth and surrounding bone with a surgical microscope to determine the cause of the symptoms. The very end of the root is removed and any inflamed or infected tissue removed for biopsy. A special material is placed in the end of the root canal to seal the tooth and to allow the bone to heal around the end of the root.
